Someone very special in my life has an almost spiritual affinity with wolves, and for Christmas of 1998, this was the gift I created. (Note: Ralph Edward Smith passed away unexpectedly at age 47 from an Aortic Aneurysm on December 5th, 2005. May he now have the truth, peace, and tranquility that so eluded him, he will be missed.) I should say this piece created itself, for all I had, at the time, was the porcelain cabochon and no clue as to what to do with it, just that I wanted to present it in some way with my beadwork.
As with many of my creations, they take on a life of their own and just evolve, so I just picked some bead colors and let the creative spirits have their way. When I was done beading, here was this marvelous piece and I realized I still didn't know what to do with it. I'd showed the piece to a couple of Native American friends of mine, and consulted a Native American friend that had a supply shop in Seattle. After a nights sleep running the culmination of their suggestions through my mind, at 1AM, I got up and finished the piece as it is now seen mounted here. The scans don't give the size of this justice, as it measures 11inches in length and 7 inches wide.
The wolf mostly represents intelligence, leadership, and a strong sense of family. The wolf is a teacher, it returns to its pack after extensive forage to tell everyone about new observations and experiences. It lives in a close-knit family circle without sacrificing its independence. When the wolf howls at the Moon, it identifies with its power, its spiritual energy, and the unconscious through which all knowledge can be accessed. The wolf can give you the power to become a teacher for others to understand life better and find their own path. The wolf energy will also enable you to establish a connection with your own inner leader. From Wolf, the great teacher, we learn many virtues. This mighty creature represents love, healing, relationships, forgiveness, loyalty, generosity, and companionship.
As I mentioned, the centerpiece is a genuine porcelain cabochon. I used size 13/0 charlotte cut glass, hematite, and metallic blue irised beads. Accents are 4mm bronzed barrel beads and 6mm metallic blue irised beads. Mounted on genuine leather, hand stretched and sewn on a leather wrapped ring with waxed sinew. Decorated with feathers, pony beads and genuine rabbit fur pelt.
Although this piece is not available, it gives you an idea of what could be ordered for that special occasion of something unique, individual, and/or that one-of-a-kind creation. Please visit my Cabochon Gallery for custom order ideas, then contact Sunshine for more info.
