As I mentioned before, my younger sister Theresa is a very talented seamstress, and has made clothing for her family members for years. I was especially enthralled with some of the ethnic fabrics she was using when making 'dashikis', scarves, and traditional African tam hats and caps. The colors and patterns were very bright and vivid and I was inspired!! I also LOVE the challenge of making a matching or coordinated pattern.
This particular fabric has numerous squares with different bold patterns and images. Because the fabric has so many patterns and colors, I wanted to make a set of earrings that would more or less incorporate the color scheme rather than any specific pattern in the fabric, thus I used this rather simplistic design just to tie it all together. The earrings are weaved in flat peyote with size 15/0 glass Japanese hex beads. Fringe accents include purple dyed oat beads and glass fringe drop beads.
I also have a tam hat (traditional African American style, which is similar to a pill-box style), and a scarf (trimmed with black fringe) in the material shown in the above examples Earrings are also available without the fringe and sell for $12.00. Contact Sunshine if you are interested in any of the other items mentioned.
